Mum Guilt after NICU: Life with triplets with F*** Mum Guilt founder Leila Green | S3E48

“Mum guilt” is something that pretty much every mother seems to naturally feel these days – whether it’s from comparing yourself to that mum on Instagram who seems to manage it all, or someone telling you that you should be doing any number of things, or even just feeling like if you don’t feel guilty, then you don’t care about your children. Our guest today is here to tell you all that it’s time to let go of mum guilt – the rulebook didn’t apply to her, so she threw it out.
Leila Green, founder of the F*** Mum Guilt movement, spontaneously conceived triplets following two miscarriages, with no other twins or triplets in her family. After they were born at 33 weeks, the mum guilt started pretty much straight away. Torn between the two babies that had been discharged from NICU and the one that was still there, she constantly felt like she was letting at least one of them down at any one time.
Of course that wasn’t true, and she was doing her absolute best every day – but it kicked off a process that caused her to break up with mum guilt for good. She’s now a speaker, writer and so passionate about helping other mums (whether they have a newborn or even children with children of their own!) break up with mum guilt for good.
In this episode, we’re chatting about:
- Leila’s story of unexpectedly conceiving triplets after two miscarriages
- How mum guilt took root from day one and the self-doubt spiral
- The emotional toll of splitting herself between NICU and home
- How Leila created a movement to provide the support she needed and didn’t receive
- The four steps to follow to start letting go of mum guilt
