Supporting Dads in NICU with Luke & Tom from Dad Matters | S3E49

As today is Father’s Day, we wanted to shift the focus over to being a dad in NICU. There’s so much that needs to be done to help improve the NICU experience for families generally – but especially for dads. Men are often so much less likely to open up about how they’re feeling, but sometimes, as Luke and Tom from Dad Matters explain, they don’t even realise that they’re struggling.
Luke and Tom are both dads who have lived through NICU themselves, and now work for Dad Matters – a service designed to support fathers through the perinatal period. This episode dives into the way that neonatal care often misses dads, how dads can find support through the Dad Matters service, and how partners and family members can help to support the NICU dad in their life.
So this Father’s Day and every day, let’s all remember that men need support too, and that Dads absolutely do matter.
In this episode, we’re chatting about:
- The emotional toll NICU takes on dads, even if they say they’re fine
- What it’s like to be “the rock” during a NICU experience and why it’s a harmful expectation
- The impact of being seen and supported by someone who’s lived through it too
- How Dad Matters is working to change the NICU experience for dads and help them feel less alone
